La Roche Posay – My favourite brand for all things SPF

La Roche Posay – My favourite brand for all things SPF

If you read my ‘Let’s talk SPF…’ post a few days ago, then you will know how strongly I believe in the importance of applying SPF every day. Over the years I’ve tried a fair few products out, but I keep coming back to La Roche Posay. If you’re looking for SPF products that sit well under make-up and don’t leave you with that dreaded white-cast look, then La Roche Posay could be the new brand for you!

La Roche Posay is a French skin-care brand who specialise in making dermatological skin-care accessible to those who need it. The brand is a huge advocate for spreading awareness on sun-safety through their high-quality sunscreen and skin cancer awareness messaging.

Although I have bought numerous of La Roche Posay’s products, the ones I want to talk to you about today are my go-to products for sun protection.

The first is their Effaclar Duo+ SPF30. I use this product every morning as a moisturiser and it has worked wonders for my skin. The product aims to visibly correct imperfections and reduce blackheads. This product is ideal for oily and blemish-prone skin types and the added bonus of containing SPF 30 is a no-brainer. Apply this every morning and take comfort in the fact that you are protected from the sun.

The second product is for days when I know I will be exposed to the sun for longer periods of time, such as on holiday. It is their Anthelios Ultra-Light Invisible Fluid SPF50+ Sun Cream. This product works perfectly under my make-up and doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy. There is also no white-cast and is suitable for oily skin. I sometimes use this product under my moisturiser if I need extra protection that day, otherwise, it is my go-to face sunscreen on holiday.

My skin type is oily and I have really got on well with these products. However, on La Roche Posay’s website, they have designated pages for each skin-type, and then they suggest which of their products will work best for your skin. There is also a quiz you can take, which will work out what your skin type is. I definitely recommend this brand if you’re looking to invest in your sun-care and skin protection.

Let’s talk SPF…

Let’s talk SPF…

Protect your skin all year round!!

We all know that taking care of your skin is really really important, and we are constantly told to drink plenty of water, exercise regularly and build a varied skincare routine. But what we’re not told, is how wearing SPF every day should be at the top of our priority list.

SPF is usually associated with the summer, beach holidays and scorching hot temperatures. And even then, a lot of people don’t bother to apply sunscreen. But what most people don’t know, is that the sun can still penetrate through the clouds, so on those cold, miserable days, your skin is still exposed to the sun’s damaging UV rays. Approximately 80% of the sun’s UV rays can pass through clouds! So to play it safe, apply SPF every day to areas exposed to the sun!

SPF stands for sun protection factor and the number next to it indicates how well the sunscreen protects you against sunburn. So for example, if you use SPF 10, you’re protecting your skin for an additional 10 minutes more than it would take your skin to burn without sunscreen.

However, it’s not really the factor that you choose, its how you use it. If you applied a thick layer of SPF 30 every hour, you would have better protection than applying a thin layer of SPF 50 once a day. Most people tend to apply sunscreen once and then think they’re protected for the rest of the day. This is the biggest mistake, and the key is to apply sunscreen consistently throughout the day. As much as it can be annoying when you’re having a good time on holiday or even spending time outside on a rare sunny day in England, always apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day!

I am a huge advocate for wearing SPF every day as it is such a quick step to add to your morning routine, and the benefits are essential to maintaining healthy skin. We all want to look as young as we can for as long as we can, but is a sunkissed glow really worth the dangerous effects of the sun’s rays. Too much exposure to the sun can lead to sunburn, skin ageing, and even skin cancer. That is damage which is difficult to reverse. When there are so many self-tanners out there, is the risk really worth it?

I am in no way saying don’t spend time in the sun. The sun is our main source of vitamin D, which releases endorphins which in turn make us feel happy. Plus, everyone loves getting a summers tan. But just remember to always protect yourself in the sun. For example, wear a sun hat, avoid peak hours, and of course, always wear sunscreen!!

Now a few questions which I had and sought out the answers to.

How much sunscreen do I really need? A teaspoon worth to cover your face and about a shot glass sized amount to cover your body. Basically anywhere that is exposed to the sun needs protection.

Can I still wear make-up? Yes! Apply sunscreen as the last step in your skin-care routine and then apply your make-up. If you’re planning on being in the sun all day then maybe go au-naturel or find an SPF product that can be applied on top of make-up.

Is the SPF in a moisturiser enough? Only if you’re not planning on being exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

UVA or UVB? Both. Pick a sunscreen with a good quality broad spectrum which protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

How often should I apply sunscreen? Every two hours, and especially after being in the water.

Disclaimer. I am in no way an expert, but I just wanted to share with you what I’ve learnt, and encourage more people to apply SPF every morning and protect your skin.

Come rain or shine, please apply your sunscreen!
